NRC # 815939 Anson Mart Oil Spill, Wadesboro, Anson County, North Carolina: On Tuesday, 10/24, a black petroleum substance was reported to be discharging into Moss Creek in Wadesboro, NC. On 10/26, NCDENR Division of Water Quality formally requested EPA/ERRB's assistance in identifying and controlling the release. OSC Crowley was dispatched and arrived onsite at around 1600 on 10/26. OSC Crowley is working with the PRP, Anson County EMA Director, and NCDNR/DWQ. It appears that gasoline is emanating from the subsurface along the creek bank directly behind the Anson Mart Gas Station. In preparation for last night's expected rains, the Anson County Public Works Department constructed an underflow dam downstream of the site. OSC Crowley remains on site overseeing containment and cleanup operations.
Local, State, and Federal officials are trying to determine the source of the release.
OSC Crowley has entered into a PRFA with NC DENR Division of Water Quality.
Once determined, the source of the release, as well as any contaminated soil, will be removed and properly disposed of.
NCDENR will continue to try and find the source of the release. Furthermore, they will contain and mitigate product released.
Weather has been impeding response efforts.
