Site Description

The RCRA Program has requested Superfund investigation and assistance regarding the Kessel Lumber Supply Company in Keyser, West Virginia. This facility was a one time wood treatment facility which ceased operations in 2003. The facility was known to use chromated copper arsenate (CCA) to treat fence rails and mine lumber. It is believed that the facility stores CCA onsite. RCRA had notified the facility regarding the proper disposal of CCA tanks located on-site, but residual product remains on-site with the potential to affect groundwater in the surrounding community.

Current Activities

OSC met with WVDEP at the site to discuss future investigations and potential removal action at the site. OSC will initiate START to conduct soil, groundwater and subsurface sampling at the site to identify extent of contamination.

The site consists of 7 3,000-8,000 tanks that were previously storing CCA, potential residual product left in the tanks following a CCA removal action conducted by the property owner, and potential contamination below the storage pad and surrounding the pad area. In addition, the site's drainage system flows through a tributary to New Creek, which eventually flows to the Potomac River. The tributary will also be sampled and evaluated to define any extent of contamination.

Next Steps

Task START to conduct soil, groundwater and subsurface soil sampling at the site.

Key Issues

WVDEP concerned with potential CCA contamination at the site, and development of residential properties adjacent to the site.
