Current Activities

Investigators from the U.S. Chemical Safety Board and CAI/Arnel conducted photographic documentation, measurements of the site, and documented EPA's removal activites.

EPA continued clearing building debris and drum removal activities. To date 362 full drums have been removed from the building foot-print.  Today 30 tons of solids (181 drums)were shipped for disposal. Drum removal and HAZCATING continues. 687 gallons of liquids from the four above ground process line vats (ranging from 2000 to 3000 gal. each) were pumped out and shipped off site for disposal. Solids still remain in the vats and will be further characterized and packaged for disposal. Approximately 7450 gallons were pumped out of the USTs consisting of: 2700 gal. toluene, 1850 gal. n-butyl acetate, and 2900 gal acetate. One drum of residual nitro cellulose was identified and after coordinaiton with the manufacturer the material was secured in plastic five gallon buckets, rehydrated with dihydrogen monoxide, and over packed in a 55 gallon drums.

EPA continues to conduct air monitoring and sampling. During this period EPA colleted three rounds of 8 hour SUMMA samples and one round of ACM samples.  Air monitoring included particulate monitoring with DataRams during the residential demolition activities and EPA work-zone monitoring with AreaREAs. The air sampling has been conducted in accordance with the site Ambient Air Monitoring and Sampling Plan. Health assesments are being coordinated with ATSDR, Mass. Dept. of Public Health, , and Mass DEP.

Planned Removal Actions

Tasks to be initiated this week include: evaluate contents of the solids in the above ground vats and develop the plan to remove and dispose of the contents, continue drum removal and disposal, initiate shearing and disposal of the structural steel and coordinate with the Chemical Safety Board and CAI investigators.

Planning and coordination with the Town and MassDEP is being conducted for the following activities, which are happening adjacent to the site: demolition of 128 Water St. (EPA is providing air monitoring support)and heavy equipment delivery to and debris removal from the marina.

Key Issues

Ship ASAP the overpack containing nitro cellulouse.

Secure the above ground vats and drums to ensure no releases.

Continue coordination with local and state partners for non-site related activities to ensure safety during the EPA removal action.
