Site Description

See previous POLREPS.

Current Activities

Investigators from the U.S. Chemical Safety Board and CAI/Arnel conducted photographic documentation, measurements of the site, and documented EPA's removal activites.

EPA cleared building debris and initiated drum removal activities. To date 118 full drums have been removed from the building foot print and staged for HAZCATING. A man lift was delployed to evaluate the four above ground process line vats (ranging from 2000 to 3000 gal. each). One 3000 gal vat contained 2-3 feet of liquid on top of a sludge layer. The liquid was sampled and consisted of butyl and propyl acetate.

EPA continues to conduct air monitoring and sampling. During this period EPA colleted 8 hour SUMMA and ACM samples.  Air monitoring included DataRams and AreaREAs. The air sampling has been conducted in accordance with site air sampling strategy. Health assesments are being coordinated with the Mass. Dept. of Public Health, ATSDR, and Mass DEP.

Planned Removal Actions

Tasks to be initiated this week include: pumping out the three USTS (estimated capacity 8-9000gal), evaluate contents of above ground vats and develop the plan to address the contents, continue drum removal and disposal coordination, coordinate the request by the CAI investigators to conduct soil gas survey aroung the building foot print.

Planning and coordination with the Town, MassDEP, and property owners is also being done for the following activities, which are happening adjacent to the site: demolition of five homes and the pizza building (EPA is providing air monitoring support for this);  heavy equipment delivery to and debris removal from the marina, and  the gas main replacement along Water St.

Key Issues

Secure the above ground vats and drums to ensure no releases.

Continue coordination with non site related activities to ensure safety during the EPA removal action.
