Current Activities

Investigators from the U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) and CAI/Arnel conducted photographic documentation, collected vat samples, and documented EPA's removal activites. The CSB and Arnel investigators have demobilized from the site. The CAI investigators installed 10 permenant soil gas monitoring points and three groundwater wells.

EPA continued clearing building debris, conducted drum removal activites, and assessed the large process vats. To date 475 drums have been collected from the building footprint; 181 drums of solids and 7450 gallons of solvents from the USTs have been shipped to disposal facilities; and several drums of nitro cellulose have been collected/over packed/ and are awaiting shipment.

EPA continues to conduct air monitoring and sampling. During this period EPA has collected 3 rounds of 8-hour SUMA samples. EPA continues work-zone monitoring with AreaREAs. The Mass. DEP has been continuing FID monitoring at the property boundary and periodically obtains tedlar grab samples which are analyzed by their onsite GC.

The air sampling has been conducted in accordance with the site Ambient Air Monitoring and Sampling Plan. Health assessments are being coordinated with ATSDR, Mass. Dept. of Public Health, and Mass. DEP.

On Dec. 20th a Public Meeting was held at which approx. 50 residents attended. The meeting provided updates on the residential/commercial demolitions, the Marina demolition, and the chemical recovery and air monitoring program.

Planned Removal Actions

Evaluate contents of the above ground vats, the solids in the building footprint and develop the plan to remove and dispose of the contents; continue drum removal from around the footprint, HAZCAT, and ship off site.

Continue coordination with the Town, Mass DEP, and residents.

Key Issues

Ship ASAP the overpacks containing nitro cellulouse.

Secure the above ground vats and ensure no releases from either the vats or runoff water.

Continue coordination with local and state partners for non-related activites to ensure safety during the EPA removal aciton.
