On the morning of Sunday January 7, 2007, a freight train derailed and discharged the contents of the locomotive fuel tank into a ditch and onto the railroad ballast. Some of the diesel was contained in a ditch approximately 20 feet by 120 feet. ADEM is on scene. CSX hired Hepaco as the response contractor. Clean up commenced on Sunday afternoon. Severe storms impacted the operations. OSC Chris Russell was dispatched to oversee the RP's response
The train cars were uprighted and/or removed from the tracks. New ballast and tracks were put into place. Hepaco removed all available free product.
The contaminated soil will be excavated and sent for disposal. CSX will develop a plan, subject to ADEM approval, to remediate any oil spilled to the ballast.
ADEM will continue as the lead agency to ensure that CSX completes the response and final clean up.
