Site Description

This is an ongoing response to a chemical fire and explosion in Danvers Massachusetts. Two companies, CAI Inc. and Arnell Co were colocated in a building on Water Street. At approximately 0300hrs, a fire and explosion of unknown origin resulted in the destruction of the building and significant damage to many homes and businesses in the vicinity. There were no fatalities; several persons were hospitalized, but all have been released as of 11/25/06.

Current Activities

Since POLREP #11, the following activities have been conducted:

Consolidation, transportation, and disposal of the wastes from the Site continues according to schedule.  Cleanup of the building footprint and immediate surroundings is nearing completion.

EPA has begun the process to transfer site control back to the property owners.  Coordination with the owners is ongoing.

As of January 29, 2007, all remaining drums and other containers have been removed from the site and sent for disposal.

After the removal of scrap steel and drums from the staging area, surface soil samples were collected and the top six inches of soil were excavated and staged for disposal. A second round of samples was collected from the freshly excavated area.   Disposal of the soils will be scheduled once analytical data is received.

Throughout removal operations, EPA continues to conduct air monitoring and sampling in accordance with the site Ambient Air Monitoring and Sampling Plan and/or as directed by the Environmental Unit Leader. Health assessments are being coordinated with ATSDR, Mass. Dept. of Public Health, , and Mass DEP.

Planned Removal Actions

When the proper waste stream is determined, the remaining soil staged at the site will be loaded and shipped for disposal.

Next Steps

EPA will coordinate with the property owners to transfer site control back to them after the hazardous materials have been removed. This transfer is expected to occur within the next few weeks.

Key Issues

Continue coordination with local and state partners for non-site related activites to ensure safety during the EPA removal aciton.
