Current Activities

Transportation and disposal of the first drum shipment was completed on 1/17/07.  A total of sixty-four (64) drums were shipped from the temporary off-site staging area for disposal.  A total of forty-two (42) 55 gallon drums of cadmium, chromium and sodium hydroxide containing wastes were shipped to the EQ Detroit, Inc. facility in Detroit, MI for waste treatment/stabilization.  A total of twenty-two (22) 55 gallon drums of toxic liquids and solids (metal cyanides) were shipped to the Ross Incineration Services, Inc. facility in Grafton, Ohio. Additional drum shipments are tentatively scheduled for 1/24/07 and 1/26/07.

Plating vat removal operations continued this week.    The vats are being cut up in preparation for load-out into roll-off containers for disposal.    Associated piping is also being removed and cut into smaller pieces per disposal facility specifications prior to load-out into roll-off containers.  The work is being done as time allows between preparing and loading drums for disposal.  During the week of 1/15/07, a total of 4 ½ vats were removed as of 1/17/07.  A total of 11 vats have been removed and decommissioned to date (1/17/07).  Seven vats and one rinse trough remain.  Vat removal will continue for the remainder of the week with a completion goal of Saturday, 11/20/06.

Pump out of the indoor floor pit/sump was completed on 1/11/07.  A total of twelve (12) 55 gallon drums of water and sludge were generated from this operation.  The drums were relocated to the temporary storage off-site staging area on 1/15/07.

The organic analytical results for the soil and concrete samples collected on December 7, 8 and 14, 2006 were received from the Contract Lab Program (CLP) lab on 1/16/07.  Results are preliminary and are currently undergoing review and data validation.  No decisions will be made regarding site remedies until the data validation is complete and the analytical results for the remaining parameters are received.

Planned Removal Actions

The currently planned removal actions include the following:

• Transportation and disposal of all chemical wastes on-site;
• Removal and disposal of all tanks and vats;
• Disposal of contaminated wood plank flooring and debris;
• Pressure washing of the concrete slab floors and walls inside the plating shop;
• Collection of investigatory samples from the plating shop walls, floors and the subsurface soils beneath;
• Site restoration activities as required.

Next Steps

The anticipated next steps include:

• Complete the removal of the plating vats and associated ductwork/piping and prepare for disposal.
• Prepare the interior of the plating shop for decontamination operations.
• Continue waste shipments with the anticipated completion goal of 1/26/07.
• Develop a site-wide sampling approach to evaluate the effectiveness of the building floor decontamination and determine the nature and extent of contamination in site soils.

Key Issues

The Removal Support Team project ceiling has been adjusted from $40,000.00 to $78,000.00 to provide continuous support through project completion.
