Current Activities

Transportation and disposal of wastes continued the week of 1/22/07.  A total of three (3) 40 cubic yard roll-off containers and one (1) 30 cubic yard roll-off of hazardous debris were shipped to the EQ Detroit, Inc. facility in Detroit, MI for waste treatment/stabilization on 1/22/07, 1/23/07, 1/24/07 and 1/25/07, respectively.

A total of 48 drums were shipped for disposal from the temporary staging area on 1/24/07. A total of thirty (30) over-packs containing chromic acid, chromium trioxide, cadmium, silver and hydrochloric acid containing wastes were shipped to the Michigan Disposal Waste Treatment Plant in Belleville, MI for waste treatment/stabilization.  In addition, a total of eighteen (18) over-packs containing ammonium hydrogen di-fluoride, sodium nitrate, chromium nitrate and waste acidic and caustic solutions were shipped to the EQ Detroit, Inc. facility in Detroit, MI for waste treatment/stabilization.  A total of 112 drums have been shipped to date from the temporary off-site staging area for disposal.

The final drum shipment is tentatively scheduled for 1/29/07.

Plating vat removal operations have been completed. During this reporting period, a total of 11 vats were removed.   As of 1/25/07, all 18 vats have been removed and decommissioned.

The final removal of contaminated equipment, ductwork, piping, wood planking and construction debris has been completed as of 1/25/07.  As part of this operation,  plastic and steel piping, a generator, and two small tanks/containers were removed from the indoor floor pit/sump. Further cleaning of the indoor floor pit/sump is still underway and will be completed by 1/26/07.  Gross decontamination of the plating shop floor will commence on 1/26/07 to finalize the current phase of this removal action.

The inorganic analytical results for the soil and concrete samples collected on December 7, 8 and 14, 2006 are expected from the Contract Lab Program (CLP) lab by 1/31/07.  Results for organic analyses are currently being reviewed.  No decisions will be made regarding site remedies until all analytical results have been received, data validation is complete and a comprehensive review of the results can be performed.

An EPA Environmental Response Team scientist visited the site on 1/24/07 to assist in developing a comprehensive Site Sampling Plan.  The Plan will address the final assessment of the subsurface contamination.   Existing analytical data, site historical information and existing site conditions were included in the development process.  An outline of a Site Sampling Plan was developed and will be finalized pending receipt of all CLP analytical data for the samples collected in December 2006.

The ERRS contractor is scheduled to be demobilized for the current phase of the project by 2/2/07.

Planned Removal Actions

The currently planned removal actions include the following:

• Transportation and disposal of remaining drums and debris;
• Pressure washing of the concrete slab floors and walls inside the plating shop;
• Collection of investigatory samples from the plating shop walls, floors, and the subsurface;
• Evaluate the need for further mitigation of site contamination;
• Site restoration activities as required.

Next Steps

The anticipated next steps include:

• Shipment of drums and debris for disposal with the anticipated completion goal of 1/29/07.
• Prepare the interior of the plating shop for decontamination operations.
• Develop a site-wide sampling approach to evaluate the effectiveness of the building floor decontamination and determine the nature and extent of building and subsurface contamination.
• Demobilize the ERRS Contractor for the phase of the site cleanup by 2/2/07.
