Site Description

On May 13, 2003, a lightning strike during heavy rain storms, caused a fire and a catastrophic release of crude oil from several tanks located at a tank farm 1/2 mile North of US 66 on 337th Road in Cowley County, Kansas. Local fire departments responded to the incident.  Approximately 260 barrels of crude oil was either consumed in the fire or discharged down gradient to Cedar Creek.  Due to heavy rains and flooding conditions the oil traveled several miles downstream, oiling vegetation along the way. The tank farm was owned by Mid Continent Energy Corporation, 105 South Broadway Suite 900, Wichita, KS  67202.  Company representative, Jack Buehler, 316-265-9501.

Current Activities

Several local fire departments responded to the fire at the tank farm.  Kansas Corporation Commission and the US Environmental Protection Agency responded to the release of oil to ensure appropriate clean-up actions were taken.  Mid Continent Energy Corporation hired a cleanup contractor to contain and collect oil in Cedar Creek and also to clean-up oiled vegetation.  The clean-up was completed after several weeks.  An EPA OSC visited the site in late July 2003 to ensure the cleanup was complete.
