The Site is located at 61 Endicott Street in Norwood, Massachusetts (Latitude and Longitude: 4210'43"N, 7113'2"W respectively) on a 13-acre property which includes a total of five buildings.  Much of the exterior ground surface is a soil/gravel mix with some broken-up concrete and asphalt.  Some areas are covered with small metal and glass debris.

The Site is part of an industrial/commercial enclave in the middle of a primarily residential neighborhood.  The Site is bounded to the north, west, and east by residential properties, and to the south by industrial/commercial buildings and additional residential properties.

Between March 8th and 10th, the responsible party’s (RP) contractor excavated soil containing elevated levels of lead from three hot spots and elevated levels of chromium from one spot.  The soil was treated on-site using a proprietary process (Maectitie by Sevenson Environmental) to stabilize the metals.  Post-treatment disposal analyses indicated the process was successful.  From June 28 to 30, 2006, 668 tons of soil was transported off-site for disposal at the Waste Management of New Hampshire facility in Rochester, NH.

Post-excavation sampling was conducted and EPA collected split samples with the RP’s contractor.  Analysis of the samples indicated that the lead concentrations were reduced and that the goals set in the Administrative Order were achieved.  The chromium results indicated that elevated levels remained on-site and that additional investigation was necessary to delineate the extent of this contamination.

In the Spring of 2007, the contractor will conduct sampling activities to delineate the extent of the chromium contamination.  EPA will be on-site to oversee the sampling and to collect split samples.

If additional, impacted soil is detected, it will be mitigated by the contractor.
