Current Activities

MAY:
- Ms. Krinke assumed paying the bill for bottled water previously supplied by the Government.

JUNE:
- PRP evaluated financial status, and informed EPA of intent to demolish mill building.
- PRP preformed trial of pressure washing technique to reduce metals contamination on wood planned for re-use by PRP.
- PRP tested water pumped out of the DW pit in May 2003.  The water, stored in thirty-five 55-gallon drums near the base of the mill building, exceeded criteria for cadmium, and will require disposal as hazardous waste.

JULY:
- EPA/START prepared wood re-use criteria to be followed by PRP for re-use of wood salvaged during mill building demolition.  The criteria followed the example employed for wood re-use at the Bunker Hill Superfund site, Idaho, and specifies confirmation sampling and analysis requirements, tracking and reporting requirements, and use restrictions.

AUGUST:
- EPA/START prepared cultural resources report for State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).
- PRP submitted draft Mill Building Demolition Work Plan to EPA
- EPA/START reviewed draft demolition Work Plan

SEPTEMBER:
- PRP submitted addendum to draft Mill Building Demolition Work Plan to EPA.
- EPA/START reviewed addendum to draft Mill Building Demolition Work Plan.
- PRP submitted revised addendum to draft Mill Building Demolition Work Plan to EPA.
- PRP began initial work at site in preparation for demolition activities.


Planned Removal Actions

- PRP construction of wood washing plant.
- PRP dismantling of Mill building and segregation of recyclable materials, including wood and corrugated sheet metal.
- PRP decontaminate wood and collect samples to confirm that wood meets specified criteria.
- PRP sell wood and recyclable metal.
- PRP dispose of DW at Arlington.
- Disposal of water pumped out of DW pit in May 2003.
- Excavate tailings remaining in Mill Pond for disposal at Wenatchee landfill.
- Soil and other confirmation sampling.


Next Steps

- Oversee execution of PRP's approved Mill Building Demolition Work Plan.


Key Issues

- Potential issues include whether or not demolition activities can be completed prior to onset of winter conditions.
