Site Description

At approximately 11:35AM on April 27, 2007, lightning initiated a fire at the Wynnewood Refinery.  The refinery is located at 906 South Powell, Wynnewood, OK. Tank 138 containing approximately 50,000 barrels of naphtha was ignited.  No evacuations or shelter-in-place were issued, and no injuries reported.  Highway 77 has been closed do to the incident.  The refinery process was not interrupted and continues to operate normally.

Current Activities

The Wynnewood and the Wynnewood refinery fire departments are responding.  They are applying water to cool the sides of the tank and applying foam to the top of the tank.  The tank has a sliding lid that makes it difficult to apply foam sufficient to smother the fire.  Winds are generally from the south to southeast direction.  The facility has conducted no air monitoring.  At the time of arrival, the dark smoke plume associated with the fire appears to be rising and not effecting off site receptors.  The facility has limited air monitoring equipment.  Firefighters responding to the fire are responding without any type of respiratory protection.  Company officials indicate that none is necessary.  Firefighting water is being trapped in the secondary containment and is being pumped to the facility's waste water treatment plant.

Planned Removal Actions

William Fire Fighting has been called to assist.  They are expected to arrive at approximately 7PM.

Next Steps

1.  Extinguish fire
2.  Sample fire fighting water to treatment is sufficient prior to discharge.
