Site Description

EPA is continuing emergency removal actions at this site during the repackaging, transportation, and removal of flammable magnesium materials.  Magnesium generators, who previously supplied Remacor with recyclable magnesium and magnesium alloys, are removing their materials from the site.  Magnesium generator, Intermet, has its subcontractor conducting work at the site.  The EPA has been in communication with American Iron & Metal about removal of their product they have plans to be on site 5/24/07.   SPX Contech, from Portage, MI, is coordinating with EPA for removal of their magnesium materials.  EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to the site in addition to coordinating the activities of the various generators.

Intermet’s contractor, NIAPRO, continued to inspect drums and change lids, repackage drums as needed and replace broken or damaged pallets.  NIAPRO’s staging area is between Building 7 and Building 2 inside of gate 2 in the employee parking lot area.  NIAPRO also cleaned areas were Intermets pallets have been removed.

START assisted as needed, conducted written and photographic documentation, and monitored activities conducted on site.

Intermet’s contractor, NIAPRO, continued to inspect and stage truckloads of drums which are pending disposal.  NIAPRO’s staging is between Building 7 and Building 2 inside of gate 2.  NIAPRO continued to clean their work areas.
  
PADEP Hoffman arrived onsite to assist in management and over site of activities.  PADEP Hoffman also assisted START with sampling.
PADEP Hoffman demobilized.

START assisted as needed, conducted written and photographic documentation, and monitored activities conducted on site.  START also continued sampling around Buildings 9, 8, and 7.  A total of 12 samples and 2 duplicates were taken.


Next Steps

Intermet (generator) will continue to have their subcontractor, NIAPRO, inspect, segregate, and dispose of their magnesium material from the site.

American Iron & Metal plans to be on site 5/24/07 and submit their workplan/health and safety plan before beginning work on site.

SPX Contech (generator) will submit a workplan/health and safety plan to EPA for the handling and removal of their drums from the site.

EPA will continue to coordinate with magnesium waste generators for the safe and appropriate removal of the material from the site.  EPA will continue to coordinate with all local, state, and federal agencies.
