Current Activities

Week of October 23
Alpine completed the abatement of the SE quadrant (delivery service) and performed clearance testing.  Alpine also completed the excavation and disposal of soil and gravel from the exterior perimeter of the building.  The results of analytical testing indicated that the soils on the western side of the building, alongside the rail line used to off-load raw vermiculite from rail cars, contained asbestos at greater than 1% by polarized light microscopy (PLM).  Therefore, soil from this area was disposed of as asbestos-containing waste material.  The excavated areas were backfilled with gravel and returned to the original grade.

Week of October 30
Clearance results were obtained for the SE quadrant (delivery service).  The results passed the Z-test, which indicated that the clearance results from inside the work space were not significantly different from the results of background samples collected from outside the building.
The SE quadrant was the last section of the building to be cleaned.  Now that these final clearance results have been received, all sections of the building (including four quadrants and the crawl space) have been abated and cleared.  All sections passed the clearance testing Z-test, indicating that the final air samples collected inside each section were not significantly different from the results of background samples collected from outside the building.

December 11
EPA and START perform a final site walk-through and inspection of the building.  Following abatement, the businesses have re-occupied their work spaces and resumed their normal operations.  The wedding planner and the custom body shop have resumed their operations in the NW and NE quadrants, respectively.  The delivery service has resumed its operations in the SE quadrant, and it has expanded into the vacant SW quadrant (former junk storage) for vehicle maintenance.

Next Steps

Abatement is completed.  EPA / START will prepare and submit the final report.
