Site Description

The American Creosote site is an NPL site currently in the feasibilty study phase of RI/FS stage.  Following the emergency response in August of 2005, the On-Scene Coordinator noted that the removal program has the authority to respond to the presence of creosote waste on the Site.  The remedial program enlisted the support of the ERRB in order to address the ongoing threat to which they are unable to respond.

Please see Initial Pollution Report for additional information.

Current Activities

The PVC sheet pile wall was completed on May 2.  Since the last polrep, activities were focused on site maintenance and restoration.  The location of the wall has been tracked by GPS and a map has been generated for future reference.

The total wall length measures approximately 870 linear feet.  Please see the third attachment in the documents section on the Profile webpage entitled Site Detail Map for a map of the placement of the wall.  Additional photographs can be viewed in the Images Section.

Upon completion, the wall was cut down to grade.  A copper wire was placed on top of the wall so that it can be located in the field with a metal detector.  The wall was then covered with fill material and seeded.  Straw was placed on top of the fill material in order to deter erosion from taking place.

Planned Removal Actions

No future ERRB activities are anticipated at the Site.

Next Steps

The Remedial program will continue to investigate the Site.  The program is in the process of determining the most suitable and cost effective remedial design.  The Record of Decision is anticipated to be published in September 2007.  Pending funding, the final remedy will commence subsequent to the decision.
