Site Description

Bilbo Road Mercury is located at 1168 Bilbo Rd., Lumberton, MS.  It is associated with the Baxterville Mercury Spill Site in that it is one of the locations where the child who spilled the mercury, brought the mercury.  EPA was told the mercury was poured down the drain.

Initial efforts included emptying the sink trap contents and conducting further mercury vapor analysis to isolate elemental mercury. After closing the residence for one hour elevated mercury levels as high as 6,000 ng/m3 were observed (Reg 4 Residential Action Level= 1,000 ng/m3). Additional furniture and carpet removal are slated for 8/03/07.

Current Activities

The following activities were conducted during this reporting period:

-  All of the personal items have been screened for vapors and a couch, carpeting and pad were removed from the home.
-  Vapor levels are negligible throughout the home except for around the tub and sink of the bathroom.  This presents vapors possibly coming from the septic tank.

Planned Removal Actions

The following actions will take place during the next reporting period:

-  ERRS will replace fittings and hardware on sinks and bathtubs leading to the vent pipes to try and get better venting of the septic tank.
-  After the fittings are replaced, a closure test will be performed on the home.

Next Steps

-  The bathtub and sink may need to removed if the closure test fails.
