Site Description

EPA is continuing emergency removal actions at this site during the repackaging, transportation, and removal of flammable magnesium materials.  Magnesium generators, who previously supplied Remacor with recyclable magnesium and magnesium alloys, are removing their materials from the site.  Monitoring Wells have been installed to aide in accessing extent of contamination on site.  Winters Performance Products, Inc. is currently making preparations to ship its product off site.  MJ Metals of Bridgeport, CT, is coordinating with the EPA to be on site for drum identification and count.  To date 16 generators have removed, or are in various stages of planning in order to remove, their material off site.  EPA’s ERRS contractor Guardian mobilized to site and will be maintaining a presence on site.  EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to site in addition to coordinating the activities of the various generators.

American Iron & Metals subcontractor Von Roll America, Inc. removed 7 pallets@8 drums/pallet for a total of 56 drums removed.  The drums were shipped for incineration to their plant in East Liverpool, OH.  The estimated weight of the load was 8,400 pounds.  Von Roll is the transporter as well as the consigner for the load.

Penn Power had 2 contractors on site to scout out work to be done on power lines 10/03/07.

American Iron & Metals subcontractor Von Roll America, Inc. removed 7 pallets@8 drums/pallet for a total of 56 drums removed.  The drums were shipped for incineration to their plant in Liverpool, OH.  The estimated weight of the load was 8,000 pounds.  Von Roll is the transporter as well as the consigner for the load.

Penn Powers contractor Harlan Electric had 8 employees on site working on power lines in the SW section of the site.

EPA’s Senior Site Administrative Officer Rich Messimer mobilized to site for oversight of logistics.  Rich Messimer demobilized.

PADEP Morettini and Hoffman mobilized to site to assist in oversight of Remacor.  PADEP Morettini and Hoffman demobilized.

EPA’s ERRS contractor Guardian Environmental Services mobilized to site.  Guardian dropped off equipment that they will be using on site.

EPA’s ERRS contractor Guardian Environmental Services began preparing the areas in which they will be working.  ERRS removed debris and cleared an area for their equipment.

American Iron & Metals subcontractor Von Roll America, Inc. removed 2 pallets@8 drums/pallet and 24 over packed drums for a total of 40 drums removed.  The drums were shipped for incineration to their plant in East Liverpool, OH.  The estimated weight of the load was 7,500 pounds.  Von Roll is the transporter as well as the consigner for the load.

EPA’s OSC Dennis Matlock mobilized to site for oversight of activities taken place.  OSC Matlock demobilized.

ERRS subcontractor New Castle Lock & Key scouted locations for additional video cameras to be added for site security.

EPA’s ERRS contractor Guardian Environmental Services continued preparing the areas in which they will be working.  ERRS cleared brush, cut trees, assembled work stations and removed debris.

START assisted as needed, conducted written and photographic documentation, and monitored activities conducted on site.  START demobilized for the weekend.


Next Steps

American Iron & Metal (AIM) plans to ship 3 loads the week of 10/08/07 to Von Roll WTI for incineration.

Intermet is making plans to resume shipping their product off site.

MJ Metals (generator) will make arrangements to be on site for identification of their drums.  MJ Metals will conduct this search along with the former Plant Manager of Remacor.  

Winter Performance Product Inc is making plans to start shipping its product off site.

EPA will continue to coordinate with magnesium waste generators for the safe and appropriate removal of the material from the site.  EPA will continue to coordinate with all local, state, and federal agencies.


Key Issues

On the south side of Building #9, non-vented drums have been segregated due to reactions occurring during heavy rainfall.
