The Mallard Lake Landfill Site is located at 26 W. 580 Schick Rd, Hanover Park, IL. The coordinates of the site are 41°57’09"N Latitude
88°08’39"W Longitude. The Mallard Lake Landfill site is approximately 250 acres. The site is bordered to the north by the Du Page River and residential properties in the city of Hanover Park. To the east it is bordered by residential properties located in the city of Bloomingdale. The south portion of the site is a mixed industrial and residential area and the west portion of the site is bordered by residential properties in the city of Hanover Park

Weston Solutions, (WESTON) START, U.S. EPA OSC Steve Faryan and Walter Nied, and BFI consultants STS, continued air monitoring of homes along the Mallard Lake Facility using a TVA 1000 Flame Ionization Detector/Photo Ionization Detector  (FID/PID) and a MultiRae five-gas meter.  U.S. EPA CIC Mike received at least two requests (from Jefferson Street and Mallard Lake Estates) from residents based on the U.S. EPA notification letter that was hand delivered to residents last week during residential screening.

• WESTON START, U.S. EPA and STS continued residential screening on November 26th-28th screening 14 of 81 homes visited (30 of the homes were a second screening attempt).  
• Allied Waste received a shipment of 12 more explosive gas meters on November 26th for a total of 24 meters.
• From November 26th – 28th, 12 explosive gas meters were installed along Whitney Drive, 6 meters along Goddard Lane, one on Jefferson Street and one meter in the Mallard Lake Estates subdivision (on Widgeon Drive) for a total of 20 meters installed to date.
• To date, START, U.S. EPA and STS have screened a total of 45 homes out of 127 visited for explosive atmospheric conditions along Lawrence Avenue, Whitney Drive, Goddard Lane County Farm Road and Mallard Lake Estates (a subdivision south of Schick Road).
• From November 26th-28th, START conducted oversight of STS developing monitoring probes for groundwater sampling; groundwater sampling of existing monitoring probes and installation of shallow gas monitoring probes near existing probes were methane gas was previously detected (in Discovery Park and the utility Right of Way along County Farm Road).
• Preliminary results are pending the for the six grab soil gas samples (WLT-CP1-112307, WTL-CP2-112307, WLT-CP12-112307, WLT-RW3-112307, WLT-RW4-112307 and WLT-RW5-112307) collected on November 23rd by START  (at the request of U.S.EPA) in Discovery Park along Whitney Drive and in a utility Right of Way along County Farm Road.
• STS also collected soil gas samples using summa canisters from probes with methane detections (in Discovery Park along Whitney Drive and in a utility Right of Way along County Farm Road) on November 26th-27th.  The samples will be analyzed for VOCs.

Continue screening of homes west of the Mallard Lake Facility including Goddard and McCormick Lane and DeForest Drive. Install explosive gas detectors at homes that request a unit.

Install shallow nested wells near investigation locations in Discovery Park, Right of Way and along County Farm Road

Collect Water Samples from temporary wells

Conduct expanded methane extent of contamination study with Cone Penetrometer Rig (to be mobilized Dec 3, 2007)

Issue Fact Sheet to residents on screening of homes and installation of explosive gas detectors

Obtain access from residents to install shallow soil gas probes and sub-slab monitoring ports.

STS (Consultant for BFI) is preparing a work plan to expand and improve the methane recovery system at the Mallard Lake Landfill
