Site Description

The Mallard Lake Landfill Site is located at 26 W. 580 Schick Rd, Hanover Park, IL. The coordinates of the site are 41°57’09"N Latitude
88°08’39"W Longitude. The Mallard Lake Landfill site is approximately 250 acres. The site is bordered to the north by the Du Page River and residential properties in the city of Hanover Park. To the east it is bordered by residential properties located in the city of Bloomingdale. The south portion of the site is a mixed industrial and residential area and the west portion of the site is bordered by residential properties in the city of Hanover Park.

USEPA entered into a Consent Order with the Forest Dist. of DuPage County and BFI on Dec 4, 2007.  The Consent Order is pursuant to Section 7003 of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).  The order will require the respondants to investigate the methane extent, sample groundwater and gas for Volatile Organic Compounds, screen homes in the study area and install meters and prepare a corrective action plan to mitigate the methane that has migrated off site.

Current Activities

At 8:30 am on Monday December 3, 2007, BFI’s well drilling contractor began drilling a two-inch diameter monitoring well, designated CP-5S, about 2 feet north of the existing monitoring well CP-5 in Discovery Park at the Mallard Lake Landfill Site.  (CP-5 is in the northeast corner of Discovery Park, about 50 feet west of the Landfill fence.)  When the well reached 24 feet in depth, at 9:09 am, STS took a gas reading at the bottom of the open bore hole using a Lantech Gem 500 meter.  The readings were 2.2 % methane, 1.5% carbon dioxide, 20.1% oxygen, and 75.8% balance gases.  At 9:38 am when the well reached what would be its final depth of 30 feet, STS took another gas reading at the bottom of the hole.  The readings were 16.7% methane, 7.6% carbon dioxide, 13.9% oxygen, and 63.6% balance gases.  The well drilling contractor placed 30 feet of 1 inch-diameter PVC pipe into the well, with the bottom 5 feet being #10 slotted PVC well screen, poured sand around the well screen, and filled in the remaining area of the hole outside the PVC pipe with granular bentonite and water.

65 homes have been screened for methane vapors and explosive gas detectors have been installed in 23 of the homes.  Meters and screening of the homes are being offered to all of the homes in the study area.  BFI has hired a consultant to schedule the screening of the homes and installation of the meters.  US EPA and their contractor will accompany the BFI consultant during the installation.

Planned Removal Actions

Continue the investigation (CPT rig to mobe on Dec 6)
Re-Sample water in temporary wells and run for VOC's.  Gas samples will be collected from the wells.
Continue to Screen homes and install meters
STS to prepare plan to address migration of methane.
BFI and DuPage Forest will follow all work to be performed in the Consent Order.
USEPA will issue a fact sheet to describe the screening of homes and installation of meters and inform the public.
