Site Description

Strube, Inc. is an aircraft instrument sales and refurbishment contractor with a main office in Marietta, Pennsylvania.  The founder of Strube, Inc. (now deceased) had purchased large quantities of military surplus aircraft parts beginning soon after the end of World War II.  As the company’s inventory grew, Strube purchased additional warehouse space in several nearby communities.  Currently, Strube owns warehouses on seven properties located in the towns of Marietta, Columbia, Maytown, and Mt. Joy, all located in Lancaster County.

Current Activities

EPA continues to provide security and a fire watch until the threat is mitigated. EPA has acquired full access for sampling.

RERT continued sampling activities in one warehouse in Columbia. Sampling for particulates, Radon concentration and gamma exposure was completed for several different floors.  Gross alpha and beta analysis was completed on swipes and on air filters.  Data was downloaded from the previous days sampling event and is being tabulated.  Sampling instruments were moved to different locations in the warehouse for data collection over night. Building ventilation was installed on the highest floor of the building in an attempt to lower the radon concentrations in the building.

Sampling will be completed in this warehouse in Columbia tomorrow.

EPA met with Strube contractor GemChem to plan the removal of the hazardous and non-hazardous subtances contained in containers throughout the properties.  RERT and EPA advised Strube on the best way to remove those items.  Strube is completing this removal activity under the DEP Administrative Order.

Planned Removal Actions

EPA's ERRS contractor will subcontract for the removal of the drums currently staged in one warehouse.

Next Steps

Sampling on the warehouse in Columbia will be completed and recon of the next warehouse location will be completed by the OSC and RERT during Friday afternoon.
