Site Description

Strube, Inc. is an aircraft instrument sales and refurbishment contractor with a main office in Marietta, Pennsylvania.  The founder of Strube, Inc. (now deceased) had purchased large quantities of military surplus aircraft parts beginning soon after the end of World War II.  As the company’s inventory grew, Strube purchased additional warehouse space in several nearby communities.  Currently, Strube owns warehouses on seven properties located in the towns of Marietta, Columbia, Maytown, and Mt. Joy, all located in Lancaster County.

Current Activities

EPA continues to provide security and a fire watch until the threat is mitigated. EPA has acquired full access for sampling.

RERT completed preliminary sampling activities in the second warehouse in Columbia.  Radon concentrations remain elevated in the warehouses.  RERT and EPA completed a real-time radiation survey in the warehouse in Maytown on 2/9.  Radiation levels were detected in excess of normal backgound levels in several areas of the warehouse.  Data continues to be evaluated as it is collected.  Two members of the RERT Alabama team demobed Saturday morning.

Planned Removal Actions

Strube will be removing hazardous and non-hazardous subtances in containers during the week of 2/11.  Strube is completing this removal activity under the DEP Administrative Order.

Next Steps

NDT will be mobilizing to the site on Monday evening to conduct a site visit in anticipation of suporting future activites at the site.  RERT Las Vegas will be mobilizing two members of their team to support the continuing sampling of the warehouses.  The Strube Unified Command will have the first meeting on site mid-week.
