Site Description

Strube, Inc. is an aircraft instrument sales and refurbishment contractor with a main office in Marietta, Pennsylvania.  The founder of Strube, Inc. (now deceased) had purchased large quantities of military surplus aircraft parts beginning soon after the end of World War II.  As the company’s inventory grew, Strube purchased additional warehouse space in several nearby communities.  Currently, Strube owns warehouses on seven properties located in the towns of Marietta, Columbia, Maytown, and Mt. Joy, all located in Lancaster County.

Current Activities

EPA continues to provide security and a fire watch until the threat is mitigated. EPA has acquired full access for sampling.

RERT has completed sampling activities in the four warehouses.  Data continues to be evaluated as it is collected.  NDT completed the survey of 3 warehouses and will finalize their survey activities tomorrow. Members of Las Vegas RERT team have been delayed by inclement weather and may arrive late tonight or early tomorrow in order to continue sampling activities.

GemChem continues to remove non-radioactive hazardous materials from the Strube Warehouses.  Additional drums are expected be packed and shipped of site this week.  Strube is completing this removal activity under the DEP Administrative Order.

Planned Removal Actions

Approximately 150 drums of radium containing instruments located in one Columbia warehouse and packaged by a Strube contractor will be shipped off site.  Potential ERRS subcontractors completed a site visit today.

Next Steps

The Strube Unified Command will have the first meeting on site tomorrow.  Sampling will continue in the remaining 4 warehouses during the next 2 weeks.  The EPA mobile command post will be moved to the Mt Joy warehouse tomorrow a.m.
