Site Description

From September 2006 through May 2007, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) conducted a removal action at the HCC that involved the excavation, transportation and disposal of the pesticide-contaminated soils underneath a deteriorating asphalt cap.  In September of 2007 the USEPA conducted a removal assessment and a structural inspection of the Mixing Plant Building (MPB) in preparation for the final phase of the Removal Action.

Current Activities

On February 11, 2008 USEPA contractors mobilized to the site to begin the final phase of the Removal Action.  The final phase will consist of demolishing the MPB, removal of debris associated with the demolition, removal of the foundation, testing soils underneath the MPB for the presence of pesticide contamination, disposal of contaminated soils and finally site restoration.

Samples were collected from the different media within the MPB and sent off for disposal characterization.  USEPA worked with the owner to clear the building and ready it for demolition.  Demolition activities began on Tuesday February 12th.  The demolition plan calls for pulling down the roof inside the existing structure to minimize the generation and transportation of particulates offsite.  USEPA is continuing to conduct both air monitoring and air sampling on a daily basis during the final phase.

Approximately 50% of the roof has been pulled down (est.10,000 sq.ft.) sized for disposal and staged on the east side of the MPB.

A small area of the MPB on the south side may have asbestos containing material (ACM) present in the form of transite.  This material will be segregated and disposed of in accordance with all applicable ACM disposal requirements.

Planned Removal Actions

Continue with demolition of the MPB.

Next Steps

Complete demolition and disposal of the MPB and begin characterization of the remaining soils.
