Site Description

Strube, Inc. is an aircraft instrument sales and refurbishment contractor with a main office in Marietta, Pennsylvania.  The founder of Strube, Inc. (now deceased) had purchased large quantities of military surplus aircraft parts beginning soon after the end of World War II.  As the company’s inventory grew, Strube purchased additional warehouse space in several nearby communities.  Currently, Strube owns warehouses on seven properties located in the towns of Marietta, Columbia, Maytown, and Mt. Joy, all located in Lancaster County.

Current Activities

EPA continues to provide security and a fire watch until the threat is mitigated. EPA received permission to begin site removal activites in all warehouses on Thursday February 21, 2008.

Sampling has been completed in all warehouses.  RERT demobed on Friday the 22nd February.  RERT will be evaluating and compiling a data summary report for use in future site activities.

Selection of ERRS radiation subcontractor will be finalized by 2/29.

EPA continues to plan weekly Unified Command meetings.  The next meeting will be held on the 2/28.

Planned Removal Actions

Drums of radium containing instruments packaged by a Strube contractor remain in one Columbia warehouse and will be shipped off site under an ERRS subcontract.

Next Steps

EPA will be soliciting bids for a radiation contractor in early March.  The EPA radiation contractor will be responsible for the removal of radium containing items and other radioactive objects from  a specific warehouses.  Site work is expected to begin in Columbia in March.
