Site Description

Work Mission Statement:

Safely and efficiently investigate and remove Munitions and Explosives of Concern (MEC); Materials Potentially Possessing an Explosive Hazard (MPPEH), Munitions Debris (MD) and explosively contaminated soil(TNT) from the Elkton Farms Firehole Site, as defined in EPA's geophysical study.            


Current Activities

The site was remobed on January 21, 2008 with a limited crew.  One UXO team was mobed.  Team will continue magging and digging activities in remaining Phase I grids.  During this reporting period two more grids were completed.  On Feb 4, grid L1c and on Feb 8, grid L1b were finalized.  Approximately 6 grids remain within the Phase I area.  

1. Total Grids Cleared Gov't QA: 67
2. Total MEC found: 17,402 (MEC items include detonators,grenade fuze,blasting caps,tracer elements, incendiary bomblets, flares etc. etc.)
4. Total MD found: 2,446lbs.
5. Scrap metal found: 804lbs
6. Total Phase II processed soils: 78,311 cuft  

The EPA met with the property owner on Feb. 20, in Philadelphia to discuss site cleanup activities and status of lien waiver agreement.  A technical meeting to discuss construct of the cap for Phase II soils is set for Mar 5 at the site.
