Site Description

Work Mission Statement:

Safely and efficiently investigate and remove Munitions and Explosives of Concern (MEC); Materials Potentially Possessing an Explosive Hazard (MPPEH), Munitions Debris (MD) and explosively contaminated soil(TNT) from the Elkton Farms Firehole Site, as defined in EPA's geophysical study.            


Current Activities

The site was remobed on January 21, 2008 with a limited crew.  One UXO team was mobed.  Team will continue magging and digging activities in remaining Phase I grids.  During this reporting period three more grids were completed.  On Feb 26, grid L2b, on Feb 29, grid L2c and on March 11 L3b were finalized.  Approximately 3 or 4 grids remain within the Phase I area.  

1. Total Grids Cleared Gov't QA: 70
2. Total MEC found: 23,543 (MEC items include detonators,grenade fuze,blasting caps,tracer elements, incendiary bomblets, flares etc. etc.)
4. Total MD found: 4,231lbs.
5. Scrap metal found: 2087lbs
6. Total Phase II processed soils: 78,311 cuft  

The numbers above changed higher this reporting period due to an accounting error caught by the OSC.  

The EPA met with the property owner on March 19, 2008 on site to discuss site cleanup activities and ways for property owner to provide in kind services inlieu of payments, under the lien waiver agreement. These discussions will continue.


Planned Removal Actions

The tentative time line for removal activities this construction season is as follows:
1. March thru early April - continuation of Phase I mag and dig activities for remaining 4 grids
2. Mid April to mid May - Trommel sifting of fireholes - mid April to mid May
3. Mid May thru June - Scraping and capping of remaining Phase II grids
4. Disposal activities of staged hazardous wastes - June
5. Demobe
