Site Description

EPA is continuing emergency removal actions at this site during the repackaging, transportation, and removal of flammable magnesium materials.  Magnesium generators, who previously supplied Remacor with recyclable magnesium and magnesium alloys, are removing their materials from the site.  SPX Contech will be on site 4/17/08 to meet with its contractor for availability of repackaging and shipping.  Hitchcock Industries contacted the EPA and plans to start repacking and shipping its product the week of 4/21/08.  

EPA’s ERRS has completed reacting drums for now and is sifting brick debris left over from the burn piles.  PADEP is providing technical and oversight support at the site.  EPA START contractor TechLaw is providing technical and administrative support to the EPA.  EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to the site in addition to coordinating the activities of the various generators.

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities, areas of concern / safety issues associated with the day’s activities.  ERRS completed reacting material from Building #9 marked as residual waste and cleared the reaction pit. ERRS is sifting and moving debris to make a area where trucks can be loaded when the off loading of the 250-ton piles begins.  

START assisted as needed and conducted written/photographic documentation.

U.S.EPA OSC Marjorie Easton mobilized to site for oversight of activities.  OSC Easton demobilized.

U.S. EPA Senior Site Administrative Officer of the Removal Program Rich Messimer mobilized to site for administrative oversight.  EPA’s Rich Messimer demobilized.

PADEP Mariruth Hoffman mobilized to site to assist the EPA in oversight.  PADEP Hoffman demobilized.

National Machine and its contractor were on site to identify and repackage their material for removal

Next Steps

Product Technology plans to be on site 4/15/08.

National Machine Company plans to begin shiping its magnesium material on 4/15/08.

Hitchcock Industries Inc has contacted the EPA and plans to be on site the week of 4/21/08.

EPA will continue to coordinate with magnesium waste generators for the safe and appropriate removal of the material from the site. EPA will continue to coordinate with all local, state, and federal agencies.
