Site Description

EPA is continuing emergency removal actions at this site during the repackaging, transportation, and removal of flammable magnesium materials.  Magnesium generators, who previously supplied Remacor with recyclable magnesium and magnesium alloys, are removing their materials from the site. Hitchcock Industries contacted the EPA and plans to start repacking and shipping its product the week of 4/21/08.  National Machine has shipped its last identified load off site. Product Technology is making plans to ship its material off site.  

EPA’s ERRS has completed reacting drums for now and is sifting brick debris left over from the burn piles.  PADEP is providing technical and oversight support at the site.  EPA START contractor TechLaw is providing technical and administrative support to the EPA. EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to the site in addition to coordinating the activities of the various generators.

National Machine shipped 1 truckload of material.  The load consisted of 35 drums of material with an estimated weight of 12,250 pounds. The load was consigned to VonRoll America Inc, East Liverpool, OH and transported by Chemtron Corporation, Avon Lake, OH.  National Machine has completed shipping their identified material.

Product Technology continued identifying and staging their material. Product Technology has moved their material to a central location SE of the reaction pit and has inspected the contents. Product Technology also changed lids on drums that could be over packed in super sacks and identified drums that need a poly over pack.  Product Technology plans to ship their material off-site in the near future.

Elaine Enfonde of Nixon Peabody the parent company of SPX Contech was on site and identified the remainder of their drums and took pictures. Nixon Peabody also followed up on the arrangements with their contractor for the removal of the remaining SPX Contech drums.

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities, areas of concern/safety issues associated with the day’s activities.  ERRS is sifting brick debris and cleaning the site. ERRS continues to gather up debris from around the site and store it in a central location south of Building #9.

MHF Logistics who is contractor for 4 generators dropped off supplies to begin repackaging and shipping drums the week of 4/21/08.

Next Steps

Product Technology plans to ship its material off site the week of 4/21/08

Hitchcock Industries Inc has contacted the EPA and plans to be on site the week of 4/21/08.

EPA will continue to coordinate with magnesium turning generators for the safe and appropriate removal of the material from the site. EPA will continue to coordinate with all local, state, and federal agencies.
