The W.R. Grace Site is located in Wilder, Campbell County, Kentucky. W.R. Grace ("Grace") owned and operated a vermiculite ore processing facility at 112 North St. from 1960 until the mid-1990's. Residues from the processing operation were disposed of on the Grace property and an adjoining tract as fill material. The vermiculite ore and the residues contain actinolite and tremolite asbestos fibers.
In April 2003, EPA initiated a time critical removal action at the site, at the request of the Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection (KYDEP). The scope of work involves removal and off-site disposal of up to 40,000 tons of asbestos-contaminated soil, and the decontamination of two buildings formerly used in the vermiculite manufacturing operations.

Excavation and transportation and disposal activities continue. At this point, excavation activities are about 80% complete. To date, approximately 21,000 tons of waste has been removed from the site and disposed of at a permitted landfill. ERRS contractor costs are currently averaging about $12,000 per day.
On 12/9-12/10/03, EPA Community Involvement Coordinators (CICs)Diane Barrett and Kim Vandiver conducted interviews in the local area for the Community Relations Plan. OSC Bass joined the CICs on 12/10 during their interview with Wilder City Manager Terry Vance. No one interviewed had any knowledge of the current location of former plant employees.

Excavation and T&D activities will continue. Excavation should be complete before the break for the Christmas Holiday and T&D completed within the first 2 weeks of January 2004. At which point, decontamination of the buildings will begin. Confirmation soil samples will begin being collected and tracked by GPS by the end of this week (12/13/03). Plans are being developed for the building decontamination.

Work will be suspended over the Christmas and New Year Holidays, beginning 12/20/03, and will resume on January 5, 2004.
