Site Description

EPA is continuing emergency removal actions at this site during the repackaging, transportation, and removal of flammable magnesium materials.  Magnesium generators, who previously supplied Remacor with recyclable magnesium and magnesium alloys, are removing their materials from the site.  Hitchcock Industries is on site repackaging material belonging to Consolidated Foundries and Teledyne there are no plans at this time to ship Hitchcock material.  SPX Contech has been on site and identified the remainder of its material.  National Machine has shipped its last identified load off site.  Product Technology is making plans to ship its material off site.  

EPA’s ERRS has completed reacting drums for now and is sifting brick debris left over from the burn piles.  PADEP is providing technical and oversight support at the site.  EPA START contractor TechLaw is providing technical and administrative support to the EPA.  EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to the site in addition to coordinating the activities of the various generators.

START attended the morning safety meeting held by Hitchcock Industries.  Hitchcock continues to change lids and over-pack its material.  Hitchcock will be taking material marked Teledyne and Consolidated Foundary Inc.  All Hitchcock material on site will be addressed by the previous owners of the Hitchcock company.

USEPA’s Senior Site Administrative Officer of Removal Program Rich Messimer mobilized to site for administrative oversight.  Rich Messimer demobilized.

PADEP Mariruth Hoffman mobilized to site to assist the EPA in oversight.  PADEP Hoffman demobilized.

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities, areas of concern / safety issues associated with the day’s activities.  ERRS continued sifting brick debris and cleaning the site.  ERRS continues to gather up debris from around the site and store it in a central location south of Building #9.  ERRS is also gathering stray drums of magnesium and placing them west of Building #7 as they clean.  

START assisted as needed and conducted written/photographic documentation.

START attended the morning safety meeting held by Hitchcock Industries.  Hitchcock continued over-packing drums into containers that hold 8-55 gallon drums.

U.S.EPA’s OSC Dennis Matlock mobilized to site for oversight of activities.  OSC Matlock demobilized.

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities, areas of concern / safety issues associated with the day’s activities.  ERRS is gathering broken pallets, rusted drums and various debris from around the site.

START assisted the EPA as needed and conducted written/photographic documentation.


Next Steps

SPX Contech has plans to ship the remainder of its material in the near future.

Product Technology plans to ship its material off site the week of 4/25/08

Hitchcock Industries Inc has plans to begin shipping on 4/25/08.

EPA will continue to coordinate with magnesium waste generators for the safe and appropriate removal of the material from the site.  EPA will continue to coordinate with all local, state, and federal agencies.
