Site Description

EPA is continuing emergency removal actions at this site during the repackaging, transportation, and removal of flammable magnesium materials.  Magnesium generators, who previously supplied Remacor with recyclable magnesium and magnesium alloys, are removing their materials from the site.  Hitchcock Industries has shipped material belonging to Consolidated Foundries and Teledyne off site there are no plans at this time to ship Hitchcock material.  SPX Contech has been on site and identified the remainder of its material.  Intermet is making plans to resume shipping of its material.  Product Technology is making plans to ship its material off site.

EPA’s ERRS continues to clean and secure the site.  PADEP is providing technical and oversight support at the site.  EPA START contractor TechLaw is providing technical and administrative support to the EPA. EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to the site in addition to coordinating the activities of the various generators.

START attended the morning safety meeting held by MHF who is contracting to various generators.  MHF finished preparing drums for shipment belonging to Product Technology.  MHF will be shipping Product Technologies material on 5/05/08.

EPA OSC Jack Downie was on site for oversight of activities.

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities, areas of concern / safety issues associated with the day’s activities.  ERRS rearranged drums north of Building #8 so they will be able to sample orphaned drums the week of 5/5/07.  ERRS also did routine maintenance on all their equipment in preparation for the long weekend.  ERRS will demobilize on 5/02/08 and mobilize on 5/05/08 and resume working on 5/06/08.  

START assisted as needed and conducted written/photographic documentation.

START attended the morning safety meeting held by MHF who is contracting to various generators.  MHF shipped 1 truckload of material belonging to product Technology Inc. The load consisted of 63 drums 14 pallets @ 4 drums/pallet and 1 super sack @ 7 drums/pallet.  The load was consigned to NIAPRO, Niagara Falls, NY and transported by Hazmat Environmental, Buffalo, NY.

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc was not on site today it was their mobilization day they will be on site 5/06/08.

START assisted the EPA as needed and conducted written/photographic documentation.


Next Steps

SPX Contech has plans to ship the remainder of its material in the near future.

Intermet is making plans to resume shipping.

ERRS plans to begin shipping the 250-ton waste piles off site the week of 5/19/08.

EPA will continue to coordinate with magnesium waste generators for the safe and appropriate removal of the material from the site.  EPA will continue to coordinate with all local, state, and federal agencies.
