Site Description

EPA is continuing emergency removal actions at this site during the repackaging, transportation, and removal of flammable magnesium materials.  Magnesium generators, who previously supplied Remacor with recyclable magnesium and magnesium alloys, are removing their materials from the site.  Hitchcock Industries has shipped all material belonging to Consolidated Foundries and Teledyne off site.  SPX Contech has been on site and identified the remainder of its material.  Intermet is making plans to resume shipping of its material.  Product Technology is making plans to ship its material off site.

EPA’s ERRS is profiling material in Building #9 for waste disposal.  PADEP is providing technical and oversight support at the site.  EPA START contractor TechLaw is providing technical and administrative support to the EPA.  EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to the site in addition to coordinating the activities of the various generators.

START attended the morning safety meeting held by MHF who is contracting to various generators.  MHF shipped 88 drums (11 super sacks @ 8 drums/super sack) of material belonging to Consolidated Precision Products.  The load weighed 23,280 pounds and was consigned to MagPro, Camden, TN and transported by Triad, McAlester, OK.  MHF also prepared drums for Intermet. MHF changed lids and pallets as needed and staged drums for transport off site the week of 5/12/08.  

EPA OSC Jack Downie mobilized to site for oversight of activities.

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities, areas of concern / safety issues associated with the day’s activities.  ERRS began identifying drums of orphaned drums of magnesium that may have to be disposed of by EPA.  The lids were changed on drums that were in good condition with vented lids. The material in the drums that were not DOT shippable was placed in new drums.

START assisted as needed and conducted written/photographic documentation.

PADEP Mariruth Hoffman mobilized to site and assisted the EPA in oversight of activities.  PADEP Hoffman demobilized.

Next Steps

SPX Contech has plans to ship the remainder of its material the week of 5/12/08.

Intermet plans to resume shipping the week of 5/12/08.

ERRS plans to begin shipping the 250-ton waste piles off site the week of 5/19/08.

EPA will continue to coordinate with magnesium waste generators for the safe and appropriate removal of the material from the site.  EPA will continue to coordinate with all local, state, and federal agencies.
