Site Description

EPA is continuing emergency removal actions at this site during the repackaging, transportation, and removal of flammable magnesium materials.  Magnesium generators, who previously supplied Remacor with recyclable magnesium and magnesium alloys, are removing their materials from the site.  SPX Contech has been on site and identified the remainder of its material and will be preparing drums to be shipped off site.  Intermet is re –working pallets and drums and is actively shipping material off site.  Product Technology is making plans to ship its material off site.

EPA’s ERRS is repackaging material in Building #2 to make it DOT shippable and reacting material from Building #2 and Building #9.  PADEP is providing technical and oversight support at the site.  EPA START contractor TechLaw is providing technical and administrative support to the EPA.  EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to the site in addition to coordinating the activities of the various generators.

START attended the morning safety meeting held by MHF Logistics who is contracting for Intermet, SPX Contech, and Product Technology.  MHF continued to change lids and pallets on material belonging to Intermet. Once the lids and pallets are changed the material is being stored in Building #7.

EPA OSC Jack Downie mobilized to site for oversight of activities.

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities, areas of concern / safety issues associated with the day’s activities.  ERRS is repacking material from super sacks into drums in Building #2. ERRS has repackaged close to 50 drums for the day.  

START assisted as needed and conducted written/photographic documentation.

START attended the morning safety meeting held by MHF who is contracting for Intermet, SPX Contech, and Product Technology.  MHF finished changing lids and pallets on Intermet material and has staged their remaining drums in Building #7.  MHF started on SPX Contech material changing lids and pallets to make the material DOT shippable.  

OSC Jack Downie was on site for oversight of activities.  

EPA’s Senior Site Administrative Officer of The Removal Program Rich Messimer mobilized to site and did administrative oversight.  Rich Messimer demobilized.  

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities, areas of concern / safety issues associated with the day’s activities.  ERRS removed material from the reaction pit, cleaned it out and began mixing additional material.  ERRS also continued to repackage orphaned material in Building #2 from super sacks into drums for future shipment off site.  

START assisted the EPA as needed and conducted written/photographic documentation.


Next Steps

SPX Contech has changed its plans to ship the remainder of its material the week of 5/26/08.

Intermet has plans to continue to ship material off site until they have completed shipping all their material.

ERRS will demobilize on 5/23/08 and mobilize back to site on 5/29/08.

EPA will continue to coordinate with magnesium waste generators for the safe and appropriate removal of the material from the site.  EPA will continue to coordinate with all local, state, and federal agencies.
