Current Activities

An Action Memo Addendum was signed on June 04, 2008 to expand the scope of work to include abutting properties.  As the investigation proceeds,  additional private properties may be included in the cleanup.  RIDEM supports these decisions.

As of July 10, 2008, the excavation at the 18-20 Esmond Street Property has been completed.  Soil is staged on-site.    Additional site preparation for residential excavations is underway.

Transportation and disposal of contaminated soil began on July 15, 2008.  Soil is being transported over the road to ESMI in Laconia, New Hampshire.

On July 14, 2008, the Public Availability Sessions were held at the East Smithfield Public Library.   EPA, RIDEM and ATSDR represented the federal and state agencies involved in the cleanup.   Owners of six of the impacted properties attended the sessions and were given copies of the data results for their properties.  EPA and RIDEM discussed our evaluation of the data; ATSDR provided environmental health perspectives.  Residents were generally receptive to the plans for cleanup, but did have concerns about noise during excavation and the extent of restoratation that would be performed. Other residents will be contacted by mail.

On July 29, 2008, excavation began on residential properties.

Planned Removal Actions

Excacation of residential properties will continue through August, 2008.  Restoration and revegetation will occur in  late September, 2008.

Next Steps

Continue transportation and disposal of contaminated soils.   Complete property survey of boundaries of residential properties.

Key Issues

Communications with the community and local government have been constant and successful in keeping all parties informed of the plans and progress at the site.
