The facility was known to use chromated copper arsenate (CCA) to treat fence lumber and mine lumber. Arsenic contamination has been determined as the main contaminant of concern, and an Action Memorandum has been approved for the removal of arsenic contaminated soils, sediments and residual CCA product in the pressure vessels and tanks on site.

Soil T&D has been completed. 81 tractor trailer loads of CCA contaminated soil has been shipped for disposal to a facility in Michigan.
Crews are currently continuing the restoration process by grading and seeding the areas that had been excavated.
Crews are breaking down the larger portions of the excavated concrete pad for disposal.
All cleanup activities have been completed inside the treatment facility building, and the building has been secured.

CCA contaminated concrete, metal and wood debris, and CCA product stored in rolloff containers is scheduled for T&D this week.
An RFP went out to bidders for the disposal of the contaminated wastewater that was generated during removal action activities, and the T&D for the wastewater is scheduled to occur during the week of August 18th.

It is anticipated that all removal site activities will cease during the week of August 25th and demobe of remaining personnel and equipment will occur at that time as well. The site trailer is scheduled to be demobed on August 22nd.

A meeting with the Mineral County Commissioners office is scheduled for August 26th. The Commissioners office had requested that EPA provide them with a discussion of the removal action, next steps, and recommendations on a path forward for the county to follow to address any future activities that may occur at the Kessel Lumber facility.
