Site Description

On August 24,2008 a fire at a vacant mill spread to the nearby Circleville Ag Products plant located at 347 E. Corvin street, Circleville, Ohio 43113. Radiant heat from the fire caused extensive damage to the above ground tanks by causing the valves to pop ,resulting in release of the contents. About 15 homes were evacuated . Fire was put out by the fire department by late morning but continued to smolder. Liquid chemicals and run off was contained within the dyked area. Pesticides, herbicides ,fertilizers and asbestos are the compounds of concern.

Current Activities

OSC and START mobilized and provided air monitoring . Ohio EPA oversaw the removal of liquids from the diked area by a contractor hired by the Responsible party. Hourly air monitoring around the primeter and a block away indicated non detectable amounts on the multirae, particulate meter and draeger tubes, except for one location directly in line of smoke where particuate matter was 0.3 mg per meter cube and CO was 6 ppm. Both constituents were well below the levels for any concern ( dust 1.0 mg per meter cube, CO 50 ppm).

Asbestos air samplers were set up on the evening of 8/24 and the samples have been delivered to a lab for analysis with a 24 hour TAT.

Hourly air monitoring has been discontinued as of 11 AM on 8/25/2008

Planned Removal Actions

Ohio EPA will continue over sight of pumping activities in the diked area.

Next Steps

Upon receipt of asbestos data on 8/26/08 conference with the county health will be held to determine furthur course of action.
