Site Description

The Site consists of 7 structures and 4 yards situated on 5 residential properties known as “homesites.”  In winter 2007-2008, U.S. EPA, in partnership with Navajo Nation EPA (NNEPA), investigated 56 homesites containing 113 structures.  The overall investigation identified 27 structures and 12 yards requiring response actions.  The 7 structures of concern and the 4 residential yards are located within the Teec Nos Pos Chapter area.  Two of the structures are occupied for residential purposes, although one resident has since moved to another structure on the same homesite.

Current Activities

ERRS - 6, EPA - 1 (OSC Guria), START - 1, USCG - 1: ERRS completed demolition of structure HS-0005-D (an abandoned house) and excavation of contaminated soils from this homesite.  START and USCG conducted air monitoring of the operations and scanned soils and debris for segregation.

On 10/25, demolition of structure HS-0005-C (formerly occupied hogan) was completed. Excavation and compaction of the replacement pad will continue on Monday, 10/27.

Status:
HS-0002-A (house): not completed
HS-0003-A&B (house & hogan): structures and yard completed
HS-0004-C: structure and yard completed
HS-0005-C&D: structure and yard completed
HS-0007-A: structure and yard completed

Planned Removal Actions

ERRS will begin demo of HS-0002-A (an occupied house) on 10/28 or 10/29 once family has completed removal of the personal items and NTUA has disconnected power.  ERRS will also prepare a pad for the replacement house.

ERRS expects to complete Teec Nos Pos operations by 10/31, and begin to move equipment over to Cane Valley.

Next Steps

ERRS plans to begin work in Cane Valley on Monday 11/3 and plans to stand up two crews in Cane Valley.  The overall schedule is to complete all work in Cane Valley by 11/23, and begin to demobe equipment and personnel before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Key Issues

On 10/24, waste Transportation and Disposal bids were received from Waste Management for Cove and Red Valley wastes.

One replacement structure contractor, Southwest Tradition Log Homes, submitted a Statement of Work and cost estimate on Friday, 10/25.  ERRS expects to receive bids for the modular homes on Monday 10/27.

On Sunday 11/2, there will be a Cane Valley Chapter meeting at the Oljato Chapter House.
