Site Description

On Dec 3, 2008 American Commercial Lines(ACL) reported an unknown sheen with a diesel fuel odor, in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal in Lamont, Illinois at canal mile marker 299.8.  It was reported 1200 feet in length by 150 feet in width, with an unknown source, volume, origin, or cause.

Current Activities

OSC Mike Beslow arrived at the facility at approximately 2:45pm on Dec 3, 2008.  Rainbow sheens were highly visible at the edges of the slip, but not near the entrance to or in the canal.  In addition, visible product was pooling near 3 barges in the corner of the slip.  Preliminary boom had been laid by ACL and Heritage Environmental was on seen developing a remediation plan.

The Captain who had made the original report at approximately noon, said at the time of the report, the sheen was the length of the slip and approximately 150 feet wide.  He also stated that the volume of fuel oil had not appeared to increase since the report was made.   The sheen was no longer the length of the slip, the product had pooled in the corner.

Planned Removal Actions

Heritage Environmental has been hired by ACL to conduct cleanup.  They are replacing existing booms, and have executed a containment plan.  Absorbent pads have been deployed.

Next Steps

Heritage believes they have been able to soak up all of the fuel oil using absorbent pads.
