On January 6, 2004 , U.S. EPA mobilized the Emergency Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor, Earth Tech (ET), and the Superfund Technical Assistance and Response (START) contractor, Tetra Tech EM Inc., to conduct removal activities at the Smith Chemical site. Currently, all drums have been staged either in the basement or on the first floor. Empty drums have been segregated and staged separate from the drums containing product.

On Monday, February 9th, drum sampling in the basement was completed and ERRS began to sample the drums on the first floor. Due to weather conditions, a few drums of material are frozen and will be sampled at a later date. A total of 35 drums were logged and sampled. Air monitoring was conducted during all removal activities with a combustible gas indicator (CGI) and a flame-ionization detector (FID). No readings were detected above background.
On Tuesday, February 10th, ERRS sampled a total of 38 drums on the first floor. Analytical results from the samples of H300 were received and the results indicated that the material is non-hazardous; however, there are 10 hazardous constituents that are listed in 40 CFR table 302.4 in the material. Air monitoring was conducted during all removal activities with a combustible gas indicator (CGI) and a flame-ionization detector (FID). No readings were detected above background.
On Wednesday, February 11th, ERRS sampled and logged a total of 28 drums on the first floor. Air monitoring was conducted during removal activities with no readings detected above background. Ten drums of ferrous chloride and one drum of ferric chloride was shipped to the Cleveland, Northeast Regional Sewer District to be utilized in their treatment process.
On Thursday, February 12th , ERRS mobilized two chemists to site to begin hazardous categorization of the drum samples. A total of 44 samples were screened for hazardous categorization. ERRS sampled and logged a total of 23 drums on the first floor. Material belonging to a PRP (BJ Services) was segregated (11 55-gallon drums, 1 5-gallon bucket, and 18 bags of material). Air monitoring was conducted during all removal activities with a combustible gas indicator (CGI) and a flame-ionization detector (FID). No readings were detected above background.
On Friday, February 13th, hazardous categorization and drum sampling continued. Freeman Environmental was on site as a PRP to inspect a drum of lab-packed material. Chemtron, an environmental services company, was on site to give another PRP (Platers Industrial Supply) a bid for removal of their material. A total of 58 containers on the first floor were sampled and logged. A total of 40 samples were screened for hazardous categorization. Air monitoring was conducted during all removal activities with a combustible gas indicator (CGI) and a flame-ionization detector (FID). No readings were detected above background.
