On January 4 2009, Chicago Police reported a sunk boat at the River City Marina located on the South Branch of the Chicago River. U.S. Coast Guard called USEPA Emergency Response Branch on January 5 2009, 1115 hrs for action to remove the boat and address any oil spills (or potential of) into the Chicago River. USEPA OSC was onsite by 1300. Over the next two days USEPA OSC and enforcement civil investigator tracked down and contacted the boat owner and River City Marina and worked with them to ensure that they 1)installed and maintained a containment boom; and 2) hired a qualified contractor to conduct the removal as soon as possible. The boat was successfully raised by the owner's contractors on January 7, 2009, 1530 hours and subsequently towed to the Chicago Yacht Yard for repairs. The contractors suspected a bilge pump failure as the potential cause of the sinking. No oil spills were observed during the PRP led removal.
