The Fisherville Site is located at 60 Main Street (Route 122A) in Grafton, Massachusetts. The approximately 16.2-acre site is bounded to the north by Fisherville Pond, to the east by the Blackstone River, to the south by Route 122A, and to the west by private residences. The South Grafton Water District (SGWD) utilizes two overburden water supply wells, approximately 1000 feet south of the Site on the west side of the Blackstone River (designated as an American Heritage River) to supply domestic water for area residences. The surrounding area is a mix of residential, commercial and industrial properties.
- On June 22, 2004, EPA/START conducted a comprehensive permanganate sampling of all 107 injection wells and selected monitoring wells. Sodium permanganate concentrations continued to generally decrease across the injection grid area. Sodium permanganate concentrations continued to persist in the most downgradient injection points and along the eastern and western down gradient edges and averaged 1%. These areas were near locations of the third injection of permanganate solution and the groundwater re-circulation conducted in December 2003. Groundwater elevation data was also collected for all the injection point well locations.
- From June 28 to 30, 2004, EPA/START collected VOC samples from 47 injection well and monitoring well locations selected to observe potential VOC concentrations across the injection grid area. Two surface water samples were also collected from the Blackstone Canal (upstream and downstream of Route 122A). Samples were sent to the EPA New England Regional Laboratory (NERL) in Chelmsford for screening and confirmatory VOC analysis.
- On August 18, 2004, the Trip Report prepared by Weston START for the June 2004 groundwater sampling including VOC analytical results was published and posted to the EPA OSC Web site.
- On September 7, 2004, Paul Ollila of MADEP contacted OSC Tsang to report leakage of the dam after his recent site visit to the peninsula area.
- On September 28, 2004, EPA, Weston, Shaw/ERRS and MA DEP met on-site to inspect the temporary dam.
- On September 28, 2004, EPA/START conducted a comprehensive permanganate sampling of all 107 injection wells and selected monitoring wells. Sodium permanganate concentrations continued to generally decreased across the injection grid area. Sodium permanganate concentrations continued to persist in the most downgradient injection points and along the eastern and western down gradient edges and averaged less than 1%. These areas were near locations of the third injection of permanganate solution and the groundwater re-circulation conducted in December 2003. During sampling, START observed that bedrock well MW-101A which historically contained the highest concentration of TCE on-site, contained permanganate. Permanganate was still apparently migrating through bedrock fractures to this well. MW-101A was pumped dry during the June 2004 VOC sampling round with no evidence of permanganate. The additional injection in December 2003 and the purging of the well may have induced permanganate migration to MW-101A.
- On September 30, 2004, the Fisherville Redevelopment Corporation (FRC) submitted a Tier IA permit to MA DEP allowing FRC to begin comprehensive response actions under the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP) at the site.
- From October 5 to 6, 2004, EPA/START collected VOC samples from 46 injection well and monitoring well locations selected to observe potential VOC concentrations across the injection grid area. Two surface water samples were also collected from the Blackstone Canal (upstream and downstream of Route 122A). Samples were analyzed on-site by the EPA NERL Mobile Laboratory. Additional samples were sent to NERL in Chelmsford for confirmatory VOC analysis. Groundwater elevation data was also collected for all the injection point well locations.
- On October 13, 2004, personnel from Shaw/ERRS,MA DEP, SGWD, EPA and a Weston engineer met on-site to conduct repair of the temporary dam.
All planned removal actions were completed.
- Coordinate with the EPA Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) Program, FRC and MA DEP to decommission the unwanted wells prior to final demobilization of the site and the closure of the removal action.
- Conduct a final meeting to review monitoring data collected to-date with MA DEP, SGWD, FRC and the town of Grafton.
- Complete After-action Report.
