The Site is approximately 110 acres and is bordered by residents on three sides and the Otter River. The nearest home is 600 ft from the Mill. The Site has been inactive since the mid 1990's and consists of a warehouse and mill complex.
The ERRS contractor mobilized to the site, secured the perimeter, and began evaluating the mill buildings for chemicals. During the first week of activities 95 full drums, 82 empties, 5 pallets of small lab pack containers, and 4 pallets of bagged solids have been collected from the mill buildinngs A & B. These materials have been staged in the warehouse. The tank inventory has been completed. 51 total tanks have been identified. 11 of these tanks need further evaluation. On the exterior of the mill thirty 400 gallon totes have been identified. The asbestos containing material (ACM) subcontractor conducted a site walk and obtained 13 samples. The town light company remmoved 7 large transformers from the exterior of the building.
The staged drums, tanks, and totes will be sampled, hazcated, and a disposal plan developed. The ACM plan is being drafted which will be reviewed by the State, scheduled and then implimented.
The ACM abatement is planned to be initatied in mid May with an estimated duration of 5-6 weeks.
On April 25, 2005 a public informaiton meeting was conducted at which approx. 30 citizens attended. The town officials, citizens , and media seemed satisfied with the planned removal ctions.
