Emergency - Removal Action Pollution Report (POLREP) #1
Start Date: 2/21/2005
Site Description
A highway tanker accident in Hartsville, SC discharged an estimated 3,000 gallons of gasoline to the ground surface at the doorstep of a residential home on Bobo Newsome highway.  Most of the gasoline flowed into the ground and around the eastern side of the house.  Nearby residents at three homes were evacuated as a safety precaution during the response operations.

Current Activities
Florence Transport Company and Gerald Oil Company hired Enivornmental Management to conduct the removal action of the product and soil.  Approximately 7,000 gallons was removed from the tanker that did not spill during the accident.  In addition, two saddle tanks that remained intact were also removed.  They immediately began evaluation of the soil area to determine the extent of contamination and began the excavation.  SCDHEC and Darlington Emergency Management were on the scene.  The home's crawl space was also checked for organic vapors.  On the first day these levels were very high.  It is to be re-evaluated once the soil excavation is complete.

Planned Removal Actions
SCDHEC will continue oversight of the PRP's contractor to ensure the removal action is complete.  Confirmation sampling of the soil will be conducted.
