Site Description
The Sonford Products Superfund Site (the Site) consists of a 2.8 acre parcel located at 3506 Payne Drive in Flowood, Mississippi, several miles east of Jackson, Mississippi.  The Site was operated by two companies making wood preservative products that contained pentachlorpophenol (PCP) as the primary ingredient.  The Sonford Products Corporation (SPC) operated the Site from approximately 1974 to 1985.

Operations on-site ceased following a 2,000 gallon spill of PCP at the Sonford Products property in April 1985.  Approximately 2,000 gallons of PCP were spilled into the marshland south of the property.  EPA conducted removal activities at the Site in 1985.  Cleanup efforts included the removal of approximately 2,500 cubic yards of contaminated soils, the disposal of more than 10,000 gallons of oil and treating solution, and the treatment and disposal of approximately 100,000 gallons of existing wastewater.  The Sonford Products property was unoccupied from April 1985 until January 1989.  Sunrise Truck Lines began leasing the property in 1989.  Currently, the Site is leased by Lacey's Digging Service; work activities involve concrete septic tank construction.

More recent changes to the conditions on-site prompted a Preliminary Assessment and Site Inspection (PA/SI) in April 2003.  These changes included the addition of a multifamily residential structure.  After the PA/SI, additional sampling was conducted in April 2005 in order to develop information to support listing the site on the NPL.  Results from the PA/SI and additional sampling events indicated the presence of dioxins, chlorinated pesticides, metals, and other volatile organic compounds in the soil, sediment, surface water, and groundwater at the Site.   The Site was proposed for listing on the National Priorities List (NPL) on September 27, 2006.  The site was finalized on to the NPL March 2007.

Current Activities
On the afternoon of 14 JAN 08, OSC Adams and RPM Newman conducted a site visit to the Sonford Products NPL site in Flowood, MS, The site is currently being investigated by the Region 4 Remedial Superfund program.  Soil samples have been taken and the results indicate dioxin levels in surface soils at the site above removal action levels for exposure to the surface soils.  The visual assessment and site visit was being conducted by OSC Adams to determine whether potential exposures are occurring at the property.  Through visual evidence at the site and interviews of locals, it was confirmed that kids from the nearby residential area have been trespassing on the site.  Evidence of ATV traffic going around the current gate to the property and traveling through areas of the site with contaminated soils were found.  Based on these findings and the surface soil data, OSC Adams initiated a response to install a fence to prevent future trespassing and potential exposures to the contaminated soils.  The Region 4 Remedial program will be addressing the contaminated soils in the near future.

Planned Removal Actions
OSC Adams has initiated a task order with ERRS contractor WRS to secure the site.  A site survey will be conducted and then a fence will be installed to prevent trespassing and exposure to the contaminated surface soils.  The Region 4 Remedial program will be addressing the contaminated soils in the near future.

Next Steps
The next steps will be to finish acquiring access agreement with surrounding property owners, to conduct a site survey, and to install a fence around all contaminated soils.
