The Sonford Products Superfund Site (the Site) consists of a 2.8 acre parcel located at 3506 Payne Drive in Flowood, Mississippi, several miles east of Jackson, Mississippi. The Site was operated by two companies making wood preservative products that contained pentachlorpophenol (PCP) as the primary ingredient. The Sonford Products Corporation (SPC) operated the Site from approximately 1974 to 1985.
Operations on-site ceased following a 2,000 gallon spill of PCP at the Sonford Products property in April 1985. Approximately 2,000 gallons of PCP were spilled into the marshland south of the property. EPA conducted removal activities at the Site in 1985. Cleanup efforts included the removal of approximately 2,500 cubic yards of contaminated soils, the disposal of more than 10,000 gallons of oil and treating solution, and the treatment and disposal of approximately 100,000 gallons of existing wastewater. The Sonford Products property was unoccupied from April 1985 until January 1989. Sunrise Truck Lines began leasing the property in 1989. Currently, the Site is leased by Lacey's Digging Service; work activities involve concrete septic tank construction.
More recent changes to the conditions on-site prompted a Preliminary Assessment and Site Inspection (PA/SI) in April 2003. These changes included the addition of a multifamily residential structure. After the PA/SI, additional sampling was conducted in April 2005 in order to develop information to support listing the site on the NPL. Results from the PA/SI and additional sampling events indicated the presence of dioxins, chlorinated pesticides, metals, and other volatile organic compounds in the soil, sediment, surface water, and groundwater at the Site. The Site was proposed for listing on the National Priorities List (NPL) on September 27, 2006. The site was finalized on to the NPL March 2007.
EPA secured additional access agreements with all of the surrounding land owners. A survey was also conducted to ensure the property lines that the fence may cross were known. After this documentation was acquired, a 6-foot chain link fence was installed which completely encompasses the site and all contaminated soils. Gates were installed on both ends of the road that crosses the site so that controlled access can still be gained.
The Region 4 Remedial program will be addressing the contaminated soils in the near future. No further "removal actions" are planned by the Emergency Response and Removal Branch at this time.
