The Kentucky Environmental Response Team (ERT) responded to a sheen on Mud Lick Creek, in Fleming County on March 12, 2006 at 1:13pm. The cause of the sheen was from an unknown diesel (petroleum) spill on the roadside of Highway 32. It is estimated that 90-110 gallons of diesel was discharged and entered into a ditch line that ran approximately 100 yards into Mud Lick Creek. The remaining diesel has soaked into the soil and continues to cause a sheen on Mud Creek.
ERT responders built an underflow dam to prevent further sheen from traveling downstream. A contract was given to Floyd Excavating, LLC on March 15, 2006, to remove the contaminated soil and prevent further contamination to Mud Creek. Floyd Excavating, LLC began work on March 16, 2006, and ERT remains on-scene and will remain on scene until all visible stained soil has been removed.
KY ERT has hired a contractor to conduct removal operations. KY ERT is overseeing the cleanup actions.
Provide absorbant boom to Mud Lick Creek to try and remove any visible product on the water. Excavate the diesel contaminated soil to prevent further release into Mud Lick Creek.
KY ERT has requested a PFRA. A PFRA for $20,000 has been approved.
