At approximately 0900 on April 15, 2007, Carolina Power and Light (CPL) personnel discovered that approximately 17,000 gallons of transformer oil had been released from a transformer in Knightdale, North Carolina, due to a weather related event. CPL personnel hired a cleanup contractor to begin mitigating the release. At approximately 1630 on April 15, 2007, CPL personnel observed a sheen in a nearby unnamed tributary of Marks Creek and concluded that this sheen was a result of the released product. In turn, CPL personnel notified the National Response Center of the release at 1730. Upon being notified of the release by the NRC, the Telephone Duty OSC dispatched OSC Crowley to the site. OSC Crowley arrived on site the morning of April 16, 2007 and is currently conducting an assessment at the Site.
OSC Crowley is on site conducting an assessment. The PRP has hired a cleanup contractor who is working to mitigate the spill.
Free product will be removed from the nearby unnamed creek. Furthermore, the contaminated soil will be removed.
OSC Crowley will continue to provide oversight of the PRP removal actions.
