EPA received NRC Report #899028 of a 700 gallon hydrochloric acid spill and evacuation at the Bekaert plant located in Rome, Georgia. R1 OSC Karen Buerki and R2 OSC Alyssa Hughes were dispatched.
A spill of 8,400 gallons of 35% hydrochloric acid solution occurred from an elevated storage tank at Bekaert Corporation. The spill originated from a valve assembly that was damaged when piping supports failed. Nearly all of the solution was captured within secondary containment. The valve assembly and supports were replaced and all of the solution in secondary containment was pumped to Bekaert's wastewater treatment plant. A small amount of the solution from the elevated storage tank was carried by the wind outside of the secondary containment. The impacted soil was excavated and drummed for disposal. An evacuation was put in place initially until the spill could be fully evaluated. It was lifted after the solution was pumped from secondary containment.
