The Pleasant Hills Trailer Park site is a 77-acre trailer park that consists of 300 to 325 residential units known as the Village At Pleasant Hills. According to the Village At Pleasant Hills manager Louis Williams, the current number of residents at the site is estimated at 850 to 1,000. The site demographics, including number of children, are currently unknown. A portion of the site to the south is being developed and is currently not inhabited. There are two wells located in pump houses on site that provide water to the residents, and one centralized sewage treatment plant (STP). Multiple roadways service the site, including South Street, on which lead battery waste (casing fragments) has been observed.
A. On April 15, 2004, EPA Community Involvement Coordinator Megan Dougherty met with Village at Pleasant Hills Manager Lois Williams to drop off fact sheets for the upcoming soil and groundwater sampling event. Fact sheets were also posted at each of the two mailbox centers for the residents.
B. On April 19, 2004 START personnel mobilized to site to mark out pre-determined soil sample locations. Sample locations were placed at pre-determined nodes using a 100-foot grid pattern.
On April 20, 2004 START personnel conducted a surface soil (0-6" below ground surface) sampling event. A total of 282 surface soil samples were collected from throughout the trailer park. The following day START personnel collected two subsurface soil (6-12" below ground surface) samples from locations where battery casings were allegedly observed. START personnel also collected a total of three water samples from the two drinking water supply wells that service the trailer park. All soil samples collected are being analyzed for total lead content using an X-ray flourescence instrument; analytical results are pending. In addition, a percentage of the soil samples are being shipped to a participating EPA Contract Laboratory Program (CLP) laboratory for analysis of total lead content. Water samples will be shipped to a CLP laboratory for total lead analysis; analytical results are pending.
No planned removal actions are anticipated at this time.
A. EPA and START are awaiting analytical results from the soil and groundwater sampling event. The analytical data will be validated and incorporated into the site database.
b. Following receipt and review of validated analytical data, EPA will determine future actions, if any, that will be conducted at the trailer park.
